Deepwood Canine Consultants offers classes in both group and private training settings
Our private lessons, group training classes, and play groups offer a variety of options to provide your dog with the learning and socialization opportunities she needs to thrive. We believe in using reward-based training techniques which have been scientifically proven to maximize cognitive learning and behavior modification. Our goal is to create a respectful, harmonious, and mutual relationship between you and your dog that will enhance communication on both ends of the leash.
As your dog learns, so will you. You will learn to motivate your dog, understand why she does what she does and become far more knowledgeable and skilled than most by learning the fundamentals of dog psychology and everyday considerations related to your dog. Our approach is gentle, effective, fun, and designed to be mastered by all members of the family.
Deepwood Canine Consultants offers monthly group classes beginning with the first Saturday of each month. All group classes last between 60-90 minutes and meet weekly for 4 consecutive weeks (with the exception of some holidays). Training sessions are generally conducted off leash with plenty of potty breaks in between. All non-dog and non-human aggressive dogs are welcome to attend group classes. If you have questions regarding your dog’s behavior, give us a call and we can help you determine the best fit. Please check the policy tab for snow make-up days, etc. Please check our Facebook page for the latest updates to this schedule.
Puppy Kindergarten (8-16 weeks old)
Our Puppy Kindergarten class, specifically designed for pups under 4 months of age, will help you take advantage of the critical period when he’s soaking up new information. Like children, puppies need to learn appropriate behavior for living in a household and interacting with others. Unfortunately, many puppies grow into dogs that are eventually surrendered to shelters because they were never taught good behavior. Early puppy training will help you avoid bumps in the road and lead to a better relationship with your dog in the years ahead. Classes are held once a week and include topics such as:
- Proper socialization
- Diet and exercise
- Potty training
- Crate training
- Good manner cues
Foundations Class (dogs >4 months old)
The Foundations Class is the cornerstone for all classes. You will learn to communicate with your dog through simple techniques and the use of markers. Though the techniques are simple, they will require practice and consistency to become proficient with the timing of your markers. You will learn how to teach your dog to sit, down, recall, focus, touch, leave-it, stay and the framework for heeling.
Intermediate Obedience Class (Prerequisite: Foundations Class)
This fun and interactive class will take your dog to a new skill level. You will work on strengthening the foundation behaviors by adding duration, distance and distractions. This is a vital step to gaining better control over your dog. We also expand on the use of the buckets in establishing heeling and introduce play. Some aspects of this class are a little more physical than the foundation class.
Advanced Obedience Class (Prerequisite: Intermediate Obedience)
We continue to add duration, distance and distractions. You and your dog learn a higher level of play and begin using a toy as a reward. Your dog advances to hurdle jumping and begins to use its nose. If you are looking for a higher level of obedience beyond the intermediate level, this is the class for you.
Beginner Agility Non-Competitive
Beginner Agility is designed for dogs with basic obedience training but no agility training experience. In this class, you will learn how to use your body language and verbal markers to communicate clearly and effectively to your dog. You and your dog will also learn the basics of dog agility including obstacle management, development of control and confidence building techniques. Classes meet weekly for 4 consecutive weeks and last approximately 90 minutes. The class will be a mix of indoor and outdoor drills so please dress warmly and comfortably. Class size is limited to 8 participants.
Reactive Dog Workshop
Does your dog bark and lunge at dogs, people, or other environmental stimuli? Dealing with reactive dogs can be stressful, embarrassing and sometimes even dangerous. This workshop focuses on teaching you how to read body language to understand your dog’s mindset, how to redirect your dog’s attention to you, how to help your dog make good decisions, and how to reduce your own stress and anxiety in order to make walks more enjoyable. This is a 60 minute workshop with a maximum of 6 participants.
Nosework Games Workshop
Teach your dog how to use their nose by finding treats in hidden places. Nosework is fun and stimulating for your dog. It is a perfect activity to supplement those shortened, cold, winter walks. This is a 60 minute workshop.
This class provides a review opportunity where you can gain some extra assistance on training techniques you learned in class but maybe haven’t quite mastered yet. This is a 60 minute review workshop.
Behavior Modification and Private Individual Sessions
Group classes aren’t always the answer for every dog or dog owner. In some cases, you may need to schedule a private one-on-one training session to resolve specific issues with your dog. Jumping, barking, counter surfing, digging, pulling, aggression, fear and anxiety are all issues that create an unfavorable quality of life for both human and dog. Call us today to set up your private consultation.
Cancellations of private sessions require 24-hour advanced notice or a 50% cancellation fee may apply. A 100% cancellation fee applies for no-shows.
Board & Train Bootcamps
Looking to accelerate your dog’s training? Don’t have the time to devote to training your dog, yourself? Want to go on vacation while Fido learns obedience? Or maybe you feel that an expert will be able to train your pup better? Whatever the reason, we are here to help.
We offer customized 1-5 week board and train programs designed to maximize your dog’s potential. We conduct an initial assessment and develop a tailored training program for your dog. Your dog is trained in all types of practical situations, inside and outside. The dog is worked around people, other dogs and in many different environments. Dogs will stay in our indoor, climate controlled sleeping quarters and receive unlimited access to one of our trainers. Your dog will also enjoy daily playtime where he/she can enjoy romping with other canines in a large play yard or run, complete with things to climb on, run through or play with. If he would rather play with humans, we can provide that, too. A follow-up session is provided at the end of the program where we will transfer all of the information, techniques, and strategies to you to insure continued success.
Better than Doggy Day Care
We do the training for you! Day training takes place in the convenience of our climate-controlled facility which means no rearranging your schedules or rushing home after a long day at work. We do the heavy lifting and time consuming work of laying that new foundation with your puppy or dog by teaching them new life skills. You get progress reports to maintain and practice the new behaviors so you can support the training process and keep your training moving in the right direction.
Drop your dog off between 8am and 9am Monday through Friday and pick them up anytime between 4pm and 6pm (1 day = up to 10 hours). Your dog will be cared for all day long. Each dog will have his own private area where he can rest comfortably between activities. Day Training is suitable for a wide variety of dogs, including some that may not be appropriate for traditional daycare.
Daily activities include:
- Customized Obedience Training
- Polite manners: Leash manners, sit and wait at the door, down, stay, relax/settle
- Exercise walks, running and fetching in our outdoor arena
- Socialization and play-dates with appropriate dogs when available
- Potty breaks
- Naptime in private sleeping quarters
Canine Social Skills Group (dogs 4 months of age and older)

Prerequisite: Must have completed recent Deepwood Obedience or Puppy Kindergarten class or complete a temperament evaluation.
Most dog owners know that the best time to socialize their pup is when they are, in fact, a puppy. But what if you need to socialize an adolescent or adult dog? Maybe your dog was very sick as a puppy and your vet recommended that you keep them inside and away from other dogs. Or perhaps you rescued her at an older age and she just never got a good opportunity to socialize before. Whatever the reason your dog wasn’t socialized as a puppy, it doesn’t mean he has to be relegated to a life without dog friends or free play with others.
Our small socialization groups focus on building healthy social skills for your adolescent and adult dog. We offer all day open play with built in break times to ensure your dog has time to relax in between playtime. We also reinforce basic training such as siting before going in/out of doors and crates, waiting politely when having collar/leash placed, and other polite manners.
Class size is limited so give us a call to reserve your spot today 703-631-9133.
